The Challenge

Austin Consultants were contracted to provide a suite of test software to replace labour-intensive manual instrument control tests for their latest generation of TETRA (TErrestrial TRunked RAdio) digital personal radios for emergency services.

The Solution

We used the comprehensive VISA driver along with flexible, fast front panel development techniques LabVIEW provides to develop a set of flexible, test executive-ready radio tests.

VISA drivers provided flexible development practices for both serial RS-232 and GPIB instrument control and allowed for ease of deployment across several user PCs with a range of different test equipment.

LabVIEW provided a familiar User Interface experience for users, as well as rapid development of results file writing routines.

Austin Consultants provided turnkey solution based on existing test specifications for high-technology digital radio design production approvals testing.

Results

We saved 6 hours per test of development engineer time on Type Approval testing of mobile radio handsets.

Automated testing strategy allowed tests to be run overnight or unattended, rebooting radios where needed and recording all tests in a repeatable manner to Excel-compatible files.
